Who we are
Background on My Neighbor's House:
A Community Response to Crisis
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the people of Greene County witnessed firsthand the devastation that natural disasters can bring—not just to homes and infrastructure, but to the very fabric of a community. The storm’s relentless winds and catastrophic flooding left families stranded, resources depleted, and a clear need for a more unified response in times of crisis. It was during these harrowing days that a simple, yet profound, realization took root: communities are strongest when neighbors come together.
From this realization, My Neighbor’s House was born. What started as an impromptu effort to provide immediate relief—food, shelter, and emotional support—to families affected by Hurricane Helene quickly evolved into something much greater. The need for increased communication, coordination, and long-term assistance became apparent, highlighting gaps in existing support systems for Greene County’s most vulnerable residents.
Rather than allowing the disaster to define Greene County, the founders of My Neighbor’s House saw it as an opportunity to reshape how local assistance was provided. MNH now works year-round, bridging the gaps in resources, fostering community resilience, and ensuring that support is always available—not just in moments of crisis, but in everyday struggles. Whether helping families navigate recovery efforts, connecting residents with essential services, or simply providing a safe space for those in need, My Neighbor’s House stands as a testament to the power of community-driven change.
Through partnerships, volunteer efforts, and a commitment to uplifting every neighbor, the organization continues to embody the spirit of togetherness that first emerged in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Because in Greene County, no one should ever have to rebuild alone.
